The Partnach Gorge in winter

In Winter
The short version: it stays open. From October to May the gorge runs 08:00–18:00, with last entry at 17:30. The price does not change: about ten euros for an adult, about five euros for 6–17s, paid at the gate. Beyond the hours and the tariff, the operator publishes nothing about winter conditions, and neither will I.

Open, on a shorter clock

The most common thing people get wrong about this place is assuming it shuts for the winter. It does not. October to May it opens at 08:00 and closes at 18:00, which is two hours earlier than the summer timetable, and the hut stops selling at 17:30. That cut-off is what catches people out: with a 25-minute walk in from the ski stadium, a late-afternoon start in December is already gone. The two seasons are set out on the opening hours page.

What I will not tell you about winter

You will find pages describing frozen waterfalls and ice formations in this gorge in confident detail. I have no published source for any of it, and a river fed from a glacier does not behave the same way in two consecutive Januaries. What is on record is the timetable and the price. What is also on record is the operator’s warning that short-notice safety closures happen, and winter is exactly when that warning earns its keep.

Before you set off

The operator warns that “Kurzfristige Schließungen sind aus Sicherheitsgründen manchmal unumgänglich” — short-notice closures for safety are sometimes unavoidable. Rockfall and high water are the reasons a gorge shuts, and neither gives notice. Check partnachklamm.de the morning you travel, and have a second plan for the day.

Getting there in the short days

The journey does not change: bus 1 or 2 to Skistadion, then 2.2 km on foot, with no road to the entrance. What changes is the daylight. Leaving Garmisch station much after 16:30 means racing the last entry. Full detail on how to get there.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Partnach Gorge open in winter?

Yes. From October to May it opens 08:00–18:00, with last entry at 17:30. No annual closed season is published, although short-notice safety closures can happen.

Does the Partnach Gorge cost less in winter?

No. The tariff is the same all year: about ten euros for an adult, about five euros for 6–17s, dogs and visitors with a 50%+ GdB card. See the tickets page.

Does the gorge freeze over?

I have no published source describing winter conditions inside the gorge, so this site does not describe them. The operator publishes the hours and the price and nothing about ice.

What time should I arrive in winter?

Early enough to clear the 17:30 last entry with the 25-minute walk in already done — so leaving Garmisch station by about 16:30 at the very latest. See opening hours.
